Alabama Governor Vows To Close Victoryland Casino Again

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The governor and attorney general are asking law enforcement officials to shut down newly reopened electronic gambling operations, including one at VictoryLand.

Gov. Robert Bentley and Attorney General Luther Strange sent letters to the sheriffs and district attorneys of Macon and Lowndes counties.  Strange and Bentley wrote that electronic bingo is “clearly disallowed” by state law and asked the local officials to shut down the illegal operations.

They asked to hear their enforcement plans by Sept. 30.

VictoryLand reopened on Sept. 13 to enthusiastic crowds. The casino had been shuttered since 2013 when the state seized the casino’s gambling machines.

VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor said at the reopening that sheriff and district attorney have assured him the games are legal.

A VictoryLand lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.
