American Power Source Plant in Jeopardy

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – An apparel plant that makes clothing for the U.S Military is in jeopardy of closing its doors.

The American Power Source plant in Fayette will shut down October 31st leaving 119 people without a job. It’s sister plant in Columbus is threatened with the same outcome if contracts continue to go to inmates. Currently the plant in Columbus employs 141 positions, 50 of those will be lost to federal inmates.

The Government is shifting much of its apparel work to inmates in order to save money. This doesn’t bode well with Operations Manager Cathy Griffith who feels the jobs should stay with law abiding citizens and not criminals. She is hoping citizens will write their congressmen in protest to the movement.

She says, recent reports of the Columbus location closing is untrue but if the trend continues the plant will have no choice but to close its doors.
