In the short weeks between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, it seems we think about our nation's veterans more often. Maybe, it's because summer reminds us of just how american we are - with family reunions and ice cream and Elvis. And, those moments- some of them with service members in our own families - make us more grateful for the men and women who serve. This summer, one of country music's brightest stars is helping dreams come true for U.S. military families. Tim McGraw is helping to giveaway homes to vets who might never be able to afford one. For more information on Tim's project, go to operationhomefront.net.

He may have said it in jest, but Lowndes County Supervisor Leroy Brooks said the best way to approach young men with saggy fashion is head-on, as in, "Would you please pull your pants up." Brooks, who admitted to wearing bell bottom pants in the 1970's, said "you can't police everything." The droopy drawers issue was a topic at the supervisors' meeting this week. Jeff Smith brought the issue to other supervisors' attention after concern from constituents. But, a possible ordinance against wearing saggy pants never made it to a vote. Supervisors Leroy Brooks and Harry Sanders both agreed that while wearing pants that sag may not make the most fashion sense - and, in fact, may be offensive to some people, it is not illegal.

It is one the first programs of it's kind...and definitely the best. Mississippi State's G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for American Veterans is located on the state campus and serves hundreds of veterans helping them make the transition from soldier to student. The Montgomery Center serves around 10% of the student population. And, now they have expanded, including community outreach for local veterans. The website has detailed information and links on programs and educational support for veterans. Retired Army Colonel Kenneth McRae is the man in charge. Colonel Mcrae is a veteran and served as Executive Director of the Alabama National Guard. If you need assistance or have questions about the services offered at the G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Center for American Veterans, you can reach Colonel McRae and his staff at 662-325-6719. You can also email Colonel McRae kmcrae@saffairs.msstate.edu or go to their website at http://www.veterans.msstate.edu/mission/
