- Behind The Scenes
OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)--Members of a rural Oktibbeha County church congregation are counting their blessings .
An early morning blaze came close to burning down their place of worship.
A day before the Fourth of July observance, there is an ongoing arson investigation at the corner of Blackjack and Blair Road.
First responders from the East Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Department received an emergency 9-1-1 call just after three Tuesday morning.
"When we arrived on the scene we found a sixteen by eight foot storage building they use behind the church to store different items for the kitchen, or you know for different things. It was fully involved, almost on the ground," said Greg Ball, East Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Department.
Apparently suspects believed to be teenagers from the area chose to shoot their fireworks on the property at Blackjack Baptist Church, the burning storage building is directly behind the church sanctuary near a wooded area.
"Some fire works were shot into the van. And it almost was on fire at one time. But the front windshield and some of the side windows were busted out of the van," added Ball.
People living near the church had expected the worse when they heard fire works being set off earlier.
"But there had already been a complaint earlier that afternoon or earlier that night for fire works being shot in the area," said Ball.
Anyone with information on the fire should call the Oktibbeha County Sheriff Department.
