- Behind The Scenes
And the city is celebrating its 175th birthday this year with a series of events emphasizing different aspects of that history.
This week, dozens of people showed up to look at Starkville's legacy through athletics and the traditions at Mississippi State University.
MSU Football great Bill Stacy says, "Starkville has grown in leaps and bounds and it's difficult to define at what period because it's been gradual," noted MSU football great Bill Stacy during a speakers' series event.
"Both Mississippi State and Starkville realize how important each one of them is to each other," added Bailey Howell, another former MSU star.
There hasn't always been the partnership between school and city like there is now. Over the years the relationship between Starkville and MSU has strengthened.
"Starkville is recognized as one of the leading college towns in the state of Mississippi. Look what Southern has done for Hattiesburg, look what Ole Miss has done for Oxford, same thing here," Howell noted.
The year will be packed with events ranging from guest speakers, to parades, to block parties.
According to Howell, "History is very important. It doesn't matter whether it involves a municipality or university or family. It's a nice thing for people to put their hands on and to read and to appreciate."
