Trial Set for West Point Slaying Case

WEST POINT, Miss. -- A trial date is set for a Clay County man man accused of murder in the death of a Starkville teenager.
Tavaris Collins, 31, pleaded not guilty this week during his arraignment in Clay County Circuit Court. Judge Jim Kitchens set a Jan. 14, 2013 trial date.
That's almost exactly a year after Collins is accused of shooting 16-year-old Devin Mitchell, a popular Starkville High School athlete, on New Year's Day outside Ridgewood East Apartments in West Point.
Mitchell was visiting relatives when Collins allegedly opened fire because he thought someone was shooting at him. Mitchell was caught in the gunfire.
Kitchens will consider a motion to reduce Collins' $2.2 million during an October hearing.
