MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) -- Monroe County may soon be a step closer to addressing a problem with vicious dogs roaming in rural areas.

Under a proposal being discussed among Aberdeen and county officials, the county would pay Aberdeen $200 a month to lease the old city dog pound near the county jail. The sheriff's department would reopen the pound and hire an animal control officer to man it and answer stray pet calls outside the county's cities.

No deal or agreement has been finalized among the two governments.

Dogs that can be adopted out would be taken to the city-run no-kill pet shelter. Those considered too vicious will be taken to the county pound for five days for the owner to reclaim them or they will be euthanized.

County supervisors have been discussing possible options for handling roaming and vicious dogs after getting several complaints from concerned citizens earlier this year.
