Five Lowndes Roads to Get Major Work

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) -- Almost 10 miles of five busy Lowndes County roads should be repaved and striped by this fall.

Lowndes supervisors today accepted the low bid of $1,778,862.63 from Columbus-based Falcon Contracting to pave parts of Bluecutt, Lee-Stokes, Artesia, Tarleton and Border Springs roads.
Work could start by next month.

Falcon's bid bettered APAC's $1,804,356.38 offer.

The bid was almost $200,000 less than the state estimate of $1,958,118.10 for the five State Aid Road projects.

The county will have about $500,000 left that might be applied to improvements to Ridge Road, another heavily traveled road.

Supervisors say all five roads, as well as Ridge Road, are major routes in each of the county's five supervisors' districts. The paving will include striping that should significantly improve safety, especially at night.

Border Springs Road will be paved from Highway 12 to Seed Tick Road, Bluecutt will be paved from Seventh Street North to Highway 45, Lee Stokes Road will be paved from Highway 82 to Highway 182, Tarleton Road will see work from Highway 45 Alternate to the Oktibbeha County line and Artesia Road will be reworked from the county's industrial park to Artesia.

Bluecutt Road, a busy norther artery in Columbus, also will be widened a foot in each direction.
