Professional Bull Riders To Show Their Skills In Tupelo

Posted by Allie Martin | July 13, 2012 / 08:29pm | Local News
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) - For Colby Yates, bull riding is in his blood

"My dad used to ride, a lot of the guys that ride here, they grew up
on a ranch or their family member used to ride, so it's kind of a
family tradition," Yates said.

Yates is in Tupelo for the Professional Bull Riders show at the
Bancorpsouth Arena Saturday night. It also gives him a chance to visit with relatives. His wife Katie Bell is an Aberdeen native and they've been catching up this week before the competition.

The 31-year-old Texas native began riding bulls when he was 8. He says the sport is dangerous and exhilarating.

How much, typically do the bulls weigh?
"Anywhere from 14-1,500 pounds to 2,000," said the 160-pound Yates, noting the odds obviously are with the bull.

"Yeah, this is a dangerous sport, I've broken, it would be easier to
count the ones I haven't broken.  It's a big rush, something you can't control," he said.

Colby is one of 35 riders who will compete. All will get one ride,
then the top 10 will ride again to determine the winner.

The goal is to stay on the bull for 8 seconds.

"Once you watch one buck for 8 seconds and the guy ride, you'll see it does take a lot longer, seems a lot longer than 8 seconds.  It's slowed down times three for us," Yates said.

Colby is one of the oldest competitors, but says there's nothing else he would rather be doing.

"We do it cause we love it, it's a good way to make a living," he said.
