PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) - It was an anniversary that many members of the Zion Baptist Church will always remember, after the devastating fire that left parts of their church in ruins. One congregation persevering through tough times.

"We didn't lose, we gained and we're looking forward to rebuilding," says Pastor Robert Armstrong. Pastor Robert Armstrong shows pictures of the fire and the flag that stood strong only 20 feet away through the flames. "It hurt because you don't like to lose a building but it didn't lose the church, the church is still here, the people. We lost something that was very dear to our heart, that was the place we worshiped, that's the place we came together to celebrate things," added Armstrong.

The Zion Baptist Church celebrated it's 175th anniversary and even after the loss of what was known as the sanctuary, many say it hasn't broken the spirit of the community. "It's kinda a wake up call about reality of life but even beyond that, it's brought the community even closer together.. There's a lot of energy, theres an excitement that it generated about what's next, what's God gonna do next," said David Lee, Executive Director of the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware.

The two day celebration included regular Sunday worship and remembered former members of the church. One member feels for the old building which has seen many come and go through its doors. "This was kinda the center piece of our community and it's an old church, 175 anniversary and a lot of good people have come through this church, come and gone," said Mike Cox, a member of the church. The Pontotoc community may have lost a part of their church, but that hasn't stop them from coming together and looking forward to a new beginning. The congregation is currently in the process of raising funds to rebuilding the church.
