STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -- Steve Acker takes his musical talents to the football field. You may remember his popular "Bulldog Blitz" from 1980. It was released just before MSU knocked off top-ranked Alabama in the famous 6-3 football win.

The song sold 8,000 copies then and remains popular today among Bulldog fans.

"I walked into a Shoney's in Jackson and I heard the song playing over the P.A. system. People were singing the song, and I said 'I think we've got a hit here.' I talk to people all the time who still have their 45 record up on the walls 32 years later. That always blows my mind," Acker said.

Just as "Bulldog Blitz" was inspired by the 1980 season's marketing theme, on a recent trip to Starkville, Acker was once again inspired by MSU's theme, now "This is Our State."

"I saw the signs hanging up from the stadium, and I saw the billboards on the way. I walked into Backstage Music and I picked up a guitar and started playing 'Bulldog Blitz.' The owner Jim Beaty was in the store and he recognized the song," Acker said.

Acker was put in contact with other musicians at MSU and now a new CD of Bulldog tunes is ready for fans to enjoy. With his company, University Jams, Acker now writes college fan music with CDs, downloads and ringtones for several different schools, including Ohio State and Michigan. He says they are not replacing a team's beloved fight song, but giving fans something new and exciting to help pump up the crowd.

"Outside the family and the children, there's nothing that people love more affectionately than their school, their alma mater. We just want to touch people's hearts and give people something to sing about," Acker said.
