Greenwood, Fulton May Be Next on 'Saggy Pants' List

A Greenwood city councilman is considering placing a saggy pants ordinance on the council's study agenda. And Fulton aldermen are scheduled to take the issue up their meeting tonight.

The Fulton ordinance would amend the city's indecency laws to ban  wearing pants or skirts more than three inches below the top of the hip.

If the ordinance passes, violators will be hit with a $50 fine. Continued violators will face steeper fees. Violators also can be ordered to participate in up to 40 hours of community service.

The ordinance, which mirrors the one Tupelo passed earlier this year, also bans a variety of other lewd or sexual acts, including fondling, offensive gestures and complete or partial nudity.

In Greenwood, if Councilman Johnny Jennings goes ahead with the idea, it would put Greenwood among a growing number of cities in Mississippi to adopt a law against the fashion known as "sagging."

Bruce, Calhoun City, Columbia, Columbus, Guntown, Indianola, Meridian, Ripley and Saltillo have passed ordinances prohibiting anyone from wearing pants or skirts that ride more than three inches below the top of hips and which expose skin or underwear.

Jennings said he'd like to gauge the public's support for the proposal prior to placing it on the council's study agenda.
