TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Police say a gunman accused of firing into a crowded bar near the University of Alabama campus has been taken into custody.

Sgt. Brent Blakely did not release any other details about how the man was apprehended. A news conference was scheduled for 1 p.m. CDT.

Police say nearly a dozen people were wounded early Tuesday when the gunman opened fire at the bar. One person was critically hurt.

Police were also investigating whether the bar rampage was connected to a shooting about 45 minutes earlier at a home a couple of miles away. One person was wounded in that shooting.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WCBI) - Several people were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a bar in Tuscaloosa early Tuesday (7-17). In surveillance video released by officials, you can see the man strolling through a parking lot near the Copper Top Bar with a gun in one hand. Police say the man fired through a window, then fired at least 11 shots at people as they ran outside.

In a news conference, Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson said they didn't believe it was a random act of violence. Anderson says, "We believe based on what we've seen in the video that there was possible the targeting of an individual that was inside the bar, or the shooter thought was inside the bar."

Officials have issued an alert for 43-year-old Nathan Wilkins. Wilkins is said to be driving a white, Ford F150 with Alabama license plate BB54598. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.

According to a hospital spokesman, 17 people were treated this morning for injuries. Only 5 remain hospitalized.
