ESPN to Produce Documentary on Sylvester Croom

HOOVER, Ala. (WCBI/Clarion-Ledger) -- Former Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom will be the focus of a documentary produced by ESPN later this fall, SEC commissioner Mike Slive announced Tuesday.

Croom, the first minority head football coach in SEC history, is widely known for his strong character and care for his players--current and former.

Croom, hired in December of 2003, coached Mississippi State for five years but had only one winning season.

"Obviously when it happened it was a huge story and a wonderful story," Slive told reporters here at SEC media days. "Sylvester is a wonderful guy and it was a moment in time that I will always remember as one of the most significant things that has happened during my tenure and could happen during my tenure. SEC 'Storied' is a way of analyzing that and viewing it in the context of our history."

Production on the documentary is underway, and interviews with MSU faculty, former players, NFL coaches and Croom have been conducted in recent months. The documentary, which will chronicle Croom's rise in the coaching ranks, his hiring at MSU and his connections to former players, is expected to debut on ESPN this fall.

Croom, a former Alabama player, was a finalist for the coaching job at Alabama when Mike Shula was hired in 2003. Croom is now a running backs coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
What followed Croom's hiring at MSU was a series of firsts that soon became the norm across the SEC. No minority man or woman was the head coach of an SEC team 10 years ago, Slive said. Now there are three minority football coaches, eight men's basketball coaches and five women's basketball coaches.
