GED Graduation

COLUMBUS, MISS. (WCBI) -- According to Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 39% of all students in Mississippi do not graduate with a high school diploma.

But at East Mississippi Community College's GED graduation last week, students got some valuable advice from someone who has walked in their shoes.

Stacy Redmond is a nurse. But it didn't start out that way.

"I was a single mother and I just decided I needed to do that. It was important for a high school diploma," said Redmond.

After a few months of hard work, Redmond received her GED even though at times she felt the task was too difficult to achieve.

"My most difficult subject was math. There were times that I wanted to throw in the towel, but quitting is never really an option,"said Redmond.

Through the loving encouragement from her family and friends, she received her GED and was able to begin to work towards a dream she has had since a child as well as a promise she made to her grandmother before her passing.

"Because I set these goals for myself and I'm not going to stop until I accomplish all my goals, I am a registered nurse now and my next chapter is becoming a nurse practitioner," said Redmond.

Redmond offers advice to those who are in the process of completing their GED.

"Stay motivated, determined, and most of all pray, it will get hard and the times when it gets hard you pray and you keep on until you reach your goals," said Redmond.
