Gambling Raid

WEST POINT, Ms. (WCBI)--Mississing Gaming Commission agents say they confiscated more than 100 devices they say were illegal video gambling machines during raids on businesses in West Point, Noxubee County and Fulton Friday afternoon.

In the largest raids, the Gaming Commission raided Paradise Isle Internet cafe and another business next to Little Rascals convenience store, confiscating dozens of machines. Little Rascals was not involved in the raids as originally reported.

Another unnamed business in the Prairie Point area of Noxubee County and Downtown Billiards in Fulton also were raided.

Deputy Gaming Commission Director Jay McDaniel says all four raids were prompted by citizen complaints.

McDaniel said no charges had been filed as of Monday, but they could be by the end of the week.

At the two West Point locations, gamers told WCBI they buy telephone cards for a dollar. For every dollar spent, the customer would earn 100 sweepstakes points.

For those wanting to purchase more than $5 worth of phone time, they would log onto one of the computer terminals.

Philip Glover, who was issued a citation at today's raid, claims he did not know that the online game was considered illegal.

"I really don't know as far as I know I was arrested for illegal gambling. He said they are legal you know, you're playing, you're buying phone time and your playing for sweepstakes points," said Glover.

Paradise Island was raided in 2007. Portions of that case went all the way to the supreme court.
