JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) - 48,000 Mississippians could have trouble obtaining a government issued photo ID in order to vote during elections.
According to reports from the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, The Brennan Center for Justice estimates close to 500,000 people across 10 states could face challenges from new restrictive voter ID laws.
New voter ID laws are still awaiting approval by the U.S. Department of Justice or the federal courts to ensure it doesn't negatively affect minority voting.
Steps are being made to ensure Mississippians are not denied access to voting by the new law.
Representatives don't anticipate approval in time for November elections.
