Remembering Devin Mitchell

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) - The family of a slain Starkville teenager is making sure that his legacy will live on through a scholarship.

16-year-old Devin Mitchell was shot outside a West Point apartment complex not long after attending a New Year's Eve service with his family.

Mitchell was a talented athlete on the football, baseball, and track fields and a star student in the classroom.

His mother, Myrtle Mitchell, says the loss of their son to senseless gun violence has brought them an unspeakable pain that no parent should have to bear.

"It's like a piece of my world had just been snatched from under me for no reason and i would walk around and ask why."

The family says they're healing day by day and they rely on family, friends, and their faith to sustain them.

Their pastor at Saint Paul United Methodist Church in West Point, Maggie Little, has been a great source of comfort. She says, "We at the church are not afraid to recall that smile. All of us were recipients of the hugs and so we talk about him. We talk about his life. We cry together and that help them as well as the rest of us."

The Mitchells want to make sure their son's memory lives on. With help from the United Methodist Church, they've established a scholarship fund in Devin's name.

His father, Aubrey Mitchell says, "We want to help kids be able to go to college. What we want to do is help any way we can to help other kids to get there."

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the Devin R. Mitchell Scholarship Fund, you can send it to the Mississippi United Methodist Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 2415 Ridgeland, MS 39158-2415 or the Starkville District of the UMC, P.O. Box 1329 Starkville, MS 39760.
