TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) - One afternoon each week, for six weeks these kids got a crash course  in tennis.

This is the third year that Tupelo Parks and Rec has held the 10 and  under tennis league.  Instructor Mandy Keith calls it t ball for tennis.

"It's the starting point, courts are smaller, rackets and smaller  balls are bigger and it makes it easy for them to get started in the sport," said Instructor Mandy Keith.

About 35 kids  ranging in age from 5 to 10 were introduced to the  fundamentals.  They are grouped with other students their own age and  skill level .They are taught how to hit forehands, backhands and other  basics of the sport.

Creative instructors even found a way to use water balloons to  reinforce their teaching.

Whether they're new to the sport, or aspiring pros, students say the  tennis camp is not only fun, but beneficial.

"I learned how to hold the racquet, how to keep score.  Is tennis  harder or easier than you thought?  Easier.  Good workout? Yessir," said Wesley Gillentine, a first time student.

What do you like most?  "Competition  and how people try and get the  ball to go past people cause it's really challenging,"said Julie Laney, who is a returning student.

Instructors say the camp also shows kids that tennis is a lifetime sport.

"I have kids starting out at 5 and I play ladies well into their 80s," Keith said.

This camp has proven to be so popular that park and rec may hold a  fall league.
