LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) -- A grinding high speed head-on crash takes the life of a Caledonia man in Lowndes County.

Witnesses tell WCBI an 18-wheeler carrying metal pipe was northbound on Highway 45 when a southbound GMC Sierra pickup driven by 21-year-old Terry Norris crossed two lanes before ramming into the big rig. Norris was a father of one, who graduate from New Hope High School.

The collision dislodged the flatbed's fuel tanks, setting diesel fuel on fire along the road as the rig skidded into a tree line.

The impact scattered tires and truck parts over a 150-yard area.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says Norris was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Coroner Tim Hamilton said Norris' family said he'd been staying with a brother who lives on Highway 45 and may have been returning to his home.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Herschel Tilley of Coker, Alabama, and the driver of a small car, William Legier of Charlotte, Tenn., that drove into the accident scene and hit the pickup after it spun around and stopped in the southbound lanes were not seriously injured.

The accident happened just before midnight Thursday just north of Jess Lyons Road. All four lanes of Highway 45 were blocked for about three hours while emergency crews cleaned up the scene. Part of the 18-wheeler and some of the debris still was at the scene Friday morning.
