North Pontotoc Ready For Next Step After 2011

ECRU, Miss. (WCBI) -- For just the second time since 1981, North Pontotoc's football team won more than eight games in a season.

Life hasn't been easy for Brian Sutton and the Vikings in class 4A. Mostly due in part to a loaded 4A north with the likes of Lafayette, Pontotoc, Noxubee County, Amory, and Louisville standing in their way.

But even with the departure of a strong senior class, the Vikings believe they can surprise once again in 2012.

"We got some good young kids coming back for this year," head coach Brian Sutton said. "We're going to be Junior orientated this time around. The majority of our nucleus is going to be Junior kids that got some good playing time last year.

"We had a good year last year. We finished 9-3 but we were 9-1 when we went to play Lafayette. Our division is tough so we expect with our six non division games to find where we need to be."

One of those non division games includes a battle with another stout 4A side in Itawamba AHS who will have some new firepower in the backfield with transfer Ashton Shumpert.

Coach Sutton mentioned his defense should be the strength of this year's team, and with that strength the Vikings are thinking they can surprise once again in Class 4A.

"We're going to take each game one at a time," said Sutton. "We want to be competitive and play hard. If we get a chance to make a run at a title, we'll do it."
