(STARKVILLE, Ms.)(WCBI) The Starkville High School Yellow Jacket Marching Band has already been camped out for practice.
In this week's segment of Making The Grade, you'll get a sneak preview of this year's half time performance by the band.
In the heat of a Summer day, Starkville High band members have been perfecting their steps and music abilities they'll be using throughout the season.
"We are real excited here at Starkville High. Our numbers are up. We went from about 108 to 140. And the band is here, we have a great group of kids, and its just going to be a wonderful year," said Shawn Sullivan, SHS Band Director.
'They are an amazing group. They are dedicated and they, their sound is amazing, and I'm very proud to be a member of this band and be the leader of one of this band," said Katie Wood, SHS.
With a smartly crafted strategy, the musicians are reaching their goals every time they take to the field.
The music includes country, rock, blues, and gospel, all composed by famous Mississippi artists and composers.
"We're out in the morning teaching them where they are on the filed, their sets. In the afternoon we are inside teaching them their music," said Sullivan.
"So we try to keep the intensity at the same time be hydrated so we won't like dehydrate out here," said Cnee Jackson, SHS.
"Its a little grueling but its definitely worth it in the end," said Wood.
Oh yes, there is pressure.
They are striving to be as effective as last year, while setting the performance bar just a little bit higher.
"When we went to contest last year, they said we were the most articulated band ever; So we have to like keep that going. Keep that intensity going so they can know what to expect when we come," said Jackson.
The first sneak preview of the marching season was held on the Starkville High School practice field at five today [Tuesday].
This year they perform the music of Faith Hill, B.B. King, Elvis, The Canton Spirituals and more.
