COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) - It was a full house today at the Open Convocation Ceremony for the Mississippi School Of Mathematics and Science, celebrating the beginning of a new school year. It prepares students for college and beyond!

The Mississippi School of Mathematics and Science has been teaching the most academically gifted students in Mississippi for a quarter century. Many have come and gone through the program including one state senator who attended back in 1991. "It was amazing to be back for me 24 years later, I was in the second class and it was amazing to be reminded how important MSMS is to the Columbus and to the region and to the state. There's no better investment that the state of Mississippi has ever made in education," said Mississippi State Senator Will Longwitz.

Partnered for years with the Monsanto Fund, the public school received it's most substantial gift during the ceremony from the Agro Company. It's been an amazing accomplishment for the Mississippi School of Mathematics and science after 25 years of existence. The 16 thousand dollar grant will provide more science equipment for the students. "It was really neat that we got to come out two years early and start learning these things that most people get a chance to do until college," said MSMS senior Kennedy Brown. "Having this here in Columbus was a really great chance to do something different and to get more challenged in our school lives," said MSMS senior Lizzy Dobronki.

Students who attend the program go through a competitive application process. MSMS is open to juniors and seniors in high school with a record of class room excellence. "They come from all across the state of Mississippi, from every background, race, religion, creed, you name it we have it represented here and the underlining common denominator between these kids are ability and ambition and if they have that, this school can take them as far as they want to go," said MSMS Admissions Counselor Wade Leonard. The school was recently recognized by Newsweek magazine as one of the top high schools in America and MSMS was the only school in Mississippi to make the list.
