CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) - A sea of solders came out this morning in Calhoun City for a very special awards ceremony. It honored the current unit and the members that went to Iraq in the 2003- 2004 tour. They stand in formation honoring those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003 through 2004. The Valorous Unit Award is the highest award the army has to offer. Company B of the 223rd Engineer Battalion of the Mississippi National Guard was presented the award for extraordinary heroism in action

. "It's a great honor to be in the mist of solders who have distinguished themselves through gallantry and entrprety on the battle field and in the face of dancer, it's just good to be around people who think so much of their country that they're willing to put themselves in harms way like that," said Augustus Collins, Adjutant General of the National Guard. It was an amazing honor for those that served in the line of duty and are still serving today, to be here at the awarded ceremony. "It awards all theses guys our unit for going above and beyond the call of duty and we had a group of guys that would go out of their way and just do extra. I think they all desire it," adds David Mitchell, retired First Sergeant.

Retired First Sargent Mitchell connects with many of his fellow solders at the ceremony that he toured with. Their time together in action has made the unit like a brotherhood. "It was a really meaningful experience to receive the award and plus renew our acquaintances and be with some of our fellow solders that we with for 15 months," adds Mitchell. Each solders received a ribbon for their duty and sacrifice for their country. The ceremony followed with a solder "family day", with jumpers for the kids, games and refreshments.
