Rushing for Sororities

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) - With the start of a new school year, sororities and fraternities are getting prepared to welcome new members. Hundreds of young women will soon line sorority row on MSU's Campus for this year's recruitment week. With a Paelnhellenic council in place, potential new members have support and guidance through the process.

As Panhellenic's Associate Director and sorority alumna, Heidie Lindsey, says she remembers it as an exciting process. "It's crazy but it's a good crazy. I think the single best way to get involved on a college campus is by joining a fraternity or sorority, it's an immediate connection to students of all classifications," said Lindsey. Girls participating in recruitment week attend several events every day allowing them to get acquainted with the eight different sororities.

Lindsey says joining a sorority can serve as a comforting experience for incoming students. "Every new student, new and returning student, you just want to feel like you belong and we what them to feel like they belong to Mississippi State first," added Lindsey. It's a selective process, but belonging to something is what students say has had them joining, having a home away from home. "You feel really connected to these girls...and it's just helped me a lot because I'm from Tennessee so Mississippi is not my real home but I feel like it is because of them," said Katie Burch, Director of Membership. "It's definitely made me a better leader and it's helped me with my academics," added Cameron McBride, Director of Recruitment.

Selecting a new member is a complicated process which includes looking into grade point averages, leadership qualities and community service involvement. Members then decide if an applicant would be a good fit and invite them to join their sisterhood. Some students say being involved enhances your overall college experience. "You don't have to be greek on our campus to be involved and to make a difference but it sure is a good stepping stone, it's a connection you make now that last the rest of your life," added Lindsey. Members of sororities and fraternities are said to make higher grade point averages than non-greek students.
