Unity Choir Showcased During Elvis Fan Days

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) - Whether they're at the Lyric Theater, or performing on the Fairpark stage, Tupelo's Unity Choir has played a key role in this year's Elvis Fan Days.

" As a child growing up, I loved Elvis," said Unity Choir Director Betty Beene.  Its members represent various  races and denominations.

"We're Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, Pentecostal, it doesn't matter.  We're one," said Geno Jones.

They've been rehearsing for a month or so for Elvis Fan Days, but the  Unity Choir has  been together about five years.

Their mission is simple .

"Number one, giving God praise, praising Him in voice and song, using  our talents and then number two, to be able to see people who love to  sing and can sing and to see the love of the Lord as we sing the  songs," said William Anderson.

Members say there is strength in the choir's diverse makeup.

"I think the Unity choir is a big example to show all people in our  city that no matter where you are from, who you are, where you live,  we can share together, do many things together," said Elquin Gonzalez.

"It's a different style of music than I'm accustomed to, it's  exciting, a good way to praise the Lord," said Jimmy Jackson.

As Elvis helped break down barriers of music and race, the Unity Choir  is doing the same and looking forward to making its mark in  Mississippi and beyond.

"We are looking forward to this choir doing some great things, with  the help of the good Lord we are looking for God to do great things," J.D. Beene said.
