IUKA, MISS. (WCBI) - It was shortly after 9 11 when Jason Vaughn told his mom, RaNae, he wanted to join the Army.
"Everybody always appreciated his dedication. He was great," RaNae Vaughn said.
During his second tour of duty in Iraq in May 2007, Jason was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near the Stryker Vehicle he was driving.
Now, more than 5 years later, the Iuka post office is being named after the young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country he loved.
"We have a nation that's existed over 225 years and our freedom has been purchased with the blood of patriots. Jason Vaughn is another one of those long list of men who have paid the highest price in order that we might enjoy this freedom," said Cong. Alan Nunnelee.
Staff Sgt. Ben Pardee was with Jason and was injured during the incident on that fateful day in May. He reflected on Sgt. Vaughn's skills as a soldier.
"Jason was one of the finest soldiers, if not the finest soldier I ever served with. Hard worker, never needed to be told what to do, always did the right thing, inspired everybody around him," Staff Sgt. Pardee said.
Jason's parents say their son would be honored and humbled to know that his name is on the town's post office.
"There's a hole in my heart that will never be filled but this kind of brings, a little bit of, not closure, hope but consolation, because it's a great honor from the city of Iuka, the state of Mississippi, the US postal service," RaNae Vaughn said.
"This is a great day, for Iuka ,Mississippi cause this bill had to pass before the President of the United States and he had to sign it," said Walter Vaughn.
Officials pointed out that renaming a post office is an extremely rare event.
