In Tuesday's vote, 370 people, making up 66% of the vote, were opposed to the $8 million property tax increase. 192 residents voted in favor of the increase, that would have added an estimated 30% to residents' property tax bill.
The tax money would have been used to fund the Saltillo Transportation Enhancement Program, or STEP.
The project would have cost the city nearly $2.5 million dollars to complete.
STEP included a plan to add a turn lane for Mobile St. onto Cartwright St., turn old HWY 45 into 5 lanes where it meets HWY 1-45, and turn HWY 1-45 into three lanes from Mobile St. to Pannel Dr.
