Bed and Breakfast Workshops Start Next Week

Posted by Steve Rogers | August 15, 2012 / 01:25pm | Local News, Business
The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA), in collaboration with the Bed & Breakfast Association of Mississippi (BBAM), the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Heritage Trust, will host the 2012 Mississippi Bed & Breakfast Workshop Series in August and September. The six workshops will be held throughout the state to educate Mississippians on the opportunities and resources available for those starting a bed and breakfast inn.

"Our goal is to create more jobs in our state by educating Mississippians and local government officials about the benefits of bed and breakfast inns in the community," said Ron Fry, president of BBAM. "These workshops will give attendees the knowledge and tools necessary to open or invest in their own bed and breakfast inn."

Each event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. The workshop dates and locations are as follows:
  • August 21 -- Columbus, Pope Banquet Room, Mississippi University for Women Campus (Registration deadline August 17)
  • August 22 -- Clarksdale, Hopson Plantation (Registration deadline August 17)
  • August 23 -- Jackson, Fairview Inn (Registration deadline August 17)
  • September 5 -- Natchez, Monmouth Historic Inn (Registration deadline August 29)
  • September 6 -- Hattiesburg, Cultural Center (Registration deadline August 30)
  • September 7 -- Gulfport, Oak Crest Mansion Inn (Registration deadline August 31)
Attendees will learn about developing a business plan, identifying potential properties and existing facilities suited for bed and breakfast inns, zoning requirements, available tax credits for historic properties, marketing and operations and a checklist of steps necessary to open an inn.

The workshops are also designed to inform local officials of potential obstacles related to the establishment of bed and breakfast inns that might need to be overcome and the benefits of providing zoning that encourages historic preservation and the development of bed and breakfast inns.

"We hope to attract not only Mississippians interested in starting their own bed and breakfast inns but also mayors, city council members, Main Street Association representatives and tourism boards and staff to these informative events," said Joy Foy, director of MDA's Asset Development Division. "Many communities have the potential to add lodging options that create jobs, generate tax revenues, attract additional visitors, preserve historic landmarks and contribute to community revitalization with the establishment of bed and breakfast inns in their areas, and this workshop series will provide valuable information to both prospective owners and investors and local leaders interested in building their local economies."

The cost to attend the workshops is $25.00 to cover materials and lunch. For more information, contact Maybelle Beasley at (601) 956-0084 or Peter Sharp at (601) 951-1000 or visit To register, visit
