Starkville Fire Rating Lowered to 4

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Starkville has received the official notification of the improvement in the Starkville Fire Department's rating.
The insurance service office evaluates different fire protection services on a scale of one to ten, with one being the best and ten being the worst.

After many years and dedicated efforts, the Starkville Fire Department has upgraded from a five to a four. The result is that ratings help insurance providers determine fire insurance premiums and with this better rating, commercial properties should see a decrease in their fire premium costs.

Ratings are based on four different categories such as fire service communications, fire safety control, water supply and the department. The city's fire department is based on personnel, the staff's training and the equipment. A higher rating for the station means better service to the entire community from the local fire department.

It has been a long process of trying to move up to a four rating for the department. Other administration leaders began the process and Starkville's Fire Chief, Rodger Mann, has completed it.

Mann says that the successful completion of this process was made possible because of a concerted effort in the city. The Mayor and the Board of Aldermen worked with Doug Devlin, the director of public services, to create a new water system around the city recognizing water as a main component in the ratings evaluations that helped Starkville receive a class four rating.

"Now that we have completed this process and have achieved a four, it is up to me to move ahead and set the wheels in motion to become a three and make it easier for my successors," said Mann.

Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman said the fire rating upgrade is an important distinction for the City. Wiseman said, "This is a culmination of more than a decade of effort by our fire department and our staff at large to achieve an important goal for our community. A class four fire rating means that Starkville now offers a standard of fire protection that is among the highest in the state. That is good for our citizens and it's good for business."

Starkville is now one of 13 class four departments in Mississippi. Only two departments in the state are class three, which includes Jackson and Southaven.
