STARKVILLE, Miss (WCBI)-  For a father and daughter in Starkville, Black Friday shopping is an annual tradition.

For more than a decade, James “Cubby” Harris and his daughter Lateshia Butler, have hit the stores to shop the day after Thanksgiving. In recent years, the two have even started going to the midnight sales. But they say the time together is more about bonding than spending.

Harris say, “It’s something that me and my daughter started about eleven years ago and we try to keep the tradition going. But it’s special just spending time with her.”

And no one else is allowed to come along. Not even mom. Butler says, “Yes, she understands that this is daddy and daughter time and I think she understands more because she knows we’re looking for her gifts. So she gets that it’s just our time.”

They say their trip will include stops in Starkville, Columbus, and Tupelo.

Both agree it’s a tradition that will continue for years to come. “This will continue. I’ve been off to school. Now I’m even married, so one day when I have kids they’ll have to understand that I’m leaving them to go be with dad.”
