LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) -Boy Scouts spent the weekend camping and learning at East Mississippi Community College’s Golden Triangle campus this weekend.

“Boys scouts is really great, it’s a fun way to not only get outdoors but teach you valuable life lessons. It can teach things from art to engineering which is what I’m doing right now,” says Boy Scout, Justin Ricels.

Over 200 Boy Scouts from ten different counties set up their tents at EMCC for a Camporee weekend, ready to get their hands dirty with knowledge. From welding, computers, first aid, to even wood working, the scouts got a feel for everything on campus.

“Fellowship, learning, competitions amongst all of our boy scouts troops and this weekend we’re lucky enough to have EMCC serve as out host so our scouts are participating in over 18 merit badges of hobbies and career learning opportunities,” says Scout Executive, Jeremy Whitmore.

The two day event has boy scouts sleeping outside in tents and learning multiple skills that will help them in the future.

“I’m enjoying it so far, we spent out in the tents last night, it was pretty cold. We had some fun last night too, we made our flags hang up with a lot of lashing,” added Boy Scout, Robert Reed.

The weekend event is geared towards forcing kids to think outside the box. It was a great opportunity for the scouts to do something different than their daily routines. Coordinators hope the program will help each scout build character and teach them act of giving back.

Several professors were on hand to teach the kids as they had the chance to tour and use the campus.
