ABERDEEN, Miss.(WCBI)–With just about 10 days left in the month of December, city leaders in Aberdeen are planning to go out with a bang that should make for good news and even better working relationship with the county.

Like other cities in our viewing area, Aberdeen has had challenges. In the words of Mayor Belle, some good, some bad. Water service to city customers required sessions with the Public Service Commissioner.

“We had to raise some of the rates that haven’t been raised in some 19 years. But thats one of those things we had to do. So we have been able to stabilize our water system in doing so,” said Mayor Cecil Belle/Aberdeen.

Then there are contract renewal negotiations with managers of Pioneer Community Hospital. The city and county jointly owns the 35 bed critical access facility, and a sit down session with attorneys must take place.

“Because it has grown. We have surgical suites, we have more doctors coming in. So its a time that the owners should come together seeing what we can do in renewal of this contract to move forward,” said Mayor Cecil Belle.

When it comes to affordable housing, concrete slabs are about to be poured at the corner of Whitfield and Poplar Streets near the cemetery for 5 three bedroom units.

“So we want them to have a personal touch in their house. We don’t want spec houses and so we want them to feel like they have some input in the house thats going to be built,” said Mayor Cecil Belle.

A controversial bridge project near the Sheriff’s Department on North Meridian Street is requiring a meeting of the minds.

“Which gonna cost about $370,000 to move those utilities. Monies that we don’t have and monies thats kind of hard to budget for,” said Mayor Cecil Belle.

Industrial sites, hospital contract renewal, and decisions to be made on a bridge. And Mayor Belle is expected to be meeting with at least three new supervisors of the county on January 8th.

“Things that we share in common I feel that the supervisors and municipal government need to work together and a lot of times that just have not happened. So we’re hoping that this meeting is going to produce that,” said Mayor Cecil Belle.

Aberdeen city leaders have amended an ordinances for night club hours of operation. And the 8-1-1 ordinance providing for safety while there is a digging project in the area.
