COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Residential electricity users will pay more for their power starting this Fall.
The Columbus Light and Water Board has raised the base electric rate of $1.77 to $11.98.
The change takes effect October 1st.
Utility leaders say it will generate about $200,000 a year from the utility’s 9,500 residential customers.
The change is part of a rate restructure that makes the district less dependent on large industrial utilities.
Several including Omnova, Sanderson Plumbing and KIOR have closed, hurting revenues. The rate increase will help keep a surplus of more than $7 million to safeguard against natural disasters.
