COLUMBUS, MISS. (WCBI) — For some the shopping season kicked off with a stroll across the room to their computer as online sales continue to capture a bigger part of the marketplace. The lure is lower prices and in many cases no sales tax. For Mississippi shoppers they only pay sale taxes if the company has a physical location in the state.

One estimate shows that loophole is costing the state up to 300 million dollars a year. One state lawmaker says its time to revisit the idea of some type of sales tax on internet sales.

“I think in today’s world, where property owned retail stores that are on the ground so to speak, they’re paying all the tax base, they’re paying privilege tax, they’re paying ad valorem tax to be there, and the internet is able to take advantage of that business without supporting the community, so I think it’s really worth considering for that reason that sales tax currently should be thought about because of that reason.”

Currently sales taxes provides roughly 40 percent of the states income annually.
