COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- The recent shooting at Columbus Fairgrounds has city leaders considering creating a nuisance ordinance.

Councilman plan on discussing the ordinance at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

Leaders say it will give the police department and the city a chance to address businesses that have a continual track record of illicit behavior and criminal activity.

“I’m not trying not to be business friendly because we want to encourage people to run their business but we want to have a safe environment inside the city of Columbus. So I think the nuisance ordinance will give us the ability to address some of those issues,” said Ward 5 Councilman Kabir Karriem.

3 years ago Columbus created a nightclub ordinance in an effort to reduce crime.
