COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Graduation season is in full swing but after the celebrations end, graduates have to turn their focus to the job market.

Towanda Williams is the Assistant Director with MUW Career Services. She says students must network, intern, prepare resumes and be diligent with potential employers if they want to land a good job.

“A lot students who have not taken advantage of the opportunity to do volunteer work or those who may not have had the opportunity to actually have those internship positions, are finding it harder to go into those entry level jobs because employers are looking for people who have had experience,” says Williams.

Williams says the job market has improved in the last few years which is good news for recent grads.

“From last year, the economy seems to be turning around, especially in this area. So there’s some promising companies who are coming and looking for those students who are recent graduates,” says Williams.

Last month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says 165,000 jobs were added to the work force. The unemployment rate remained at 7.5 percent as of last month.
