COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–Stocks have gotten off to one of their worst starts in years. Investors following the stock market know very well that there is always a potential reason to be a little nervous when watching their investments.

Opening bell signals the beginning of another day at the New York Stock Exchange and everyone seems to be all smiles. Over the past months in North Mississippi, there seems to be nervous expectations from small business investors, even those workers watching their 401K.

“Because when you own a stock you own part of a business. You have equity in a business enterprise. And over time we know that the wealthiest people that we know in our community are business owners,” said Rhonda Ferguson/Financial Planner.

In any business, there are ups and there are downs to your bottom line.

“People don’t like to own something that fluctuates in value. But its that fluctuation that gives you return, that over time can help you get ready for retirement. Help you educate children, help you meet lots of goals and objectives,” said Rhonda Ferguson/Financial Planner.

When it comes to stocks, the experts are telling us, a decline in financial numbers is normal.

“The only guide we got is history. Every decline has been temporary and we see the market zig zag it’s way up. The market will go up and it will go down on it’s way up,” said Rhonda Ferguson/Financial Planner.

Sometimes frustration may set in, especially for people watching the market extremely close, but selling out they say is not always the best option.

“You’ve sold while its down. But our mammas always told us buy low, sell high. And if you sell while the market is down, you are doing exactly the opposite of that. And that is just human nature. That is our natural emotions cause use to react and not think logically about something we own for the very long term,” said Rhonda Ferguson/Financial Planner.

When it comes to financial planning and stocks, another tip….get a good plan and stick to it.
