TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s second  Volkswagen dealership will be bringing more traffic to North Tupelo.

As groundbreaking ceremonies were taking place, construction crews were busy pouring concrete for the area’s first Volkswagen dealership in decades.

This will be the sixth car dealership for Joe Marshall and the Barnes Crossing Auto Group. He says it makes sense to bring the well known German brand to Tupelo.

“There’s only one Volkswagen store in the state, and Volkswagen, although they have had some issues, in the last few months, they are the largest car company in the world and Volkswagen has made a commitment to the United States with a big investment in Chattanooga and we feel like that’s going to turn around and 4 or 5 years from now be a great investment in the long run.”

The 13 thousand square foot building and parking area will take up more than 7 acres on North Gloster Street. Officials say the 4 million dollar project is a sign of continuing economic growth.

“Right here at Christmas, it feels like Santa Claus is coming to town, it will be a tremendous benefit to Tupelo, job creation, economic impact, sales tax, ad valeorum tax, it is just a win win for this family owned business.”

“This is a perfect fit for this area, what’s happening here around the Barnes Crossing Mall is just incredible, you know, in spite of some very tough economic conditions nationally, Tupelo and Lee County has continued to grow and expand.”

For now, Volkswagens are being sold at this Saltillo location, but by July or August, the new dealership will be up and running. In Tupelo, I’m Allie Martin WCBi News.

The Volkswagen dealership will also have mechanics who can work on cars from other German automakers. The dealership will initially create 35 new jobs.
