Video: Work Officially Begins on Elvis Trail in Tupelo

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for a project that will connect Downtown Tupelo to East Tupelo and the Elvis Presley Birthplace.Local and state dignitaries and guests gathered for a ceremony at Fairpark to mark the beginning of the project that will include widening of East Main street,synchronized traffic signal controls,green space,sidewalks with bricked pedestrian crosswalks and other features.

The project has been in the planning stages for years and is expected to be a boost to tourism and local health and wellness efforts.

“We have many people, who come, international visitors that come and they may arrive by bus, whatever and they come downtown and they walk to the birthplace but making this connection is going to give a great people space that people can enjoy.”

Construction will begin next month.  It should be complete in early 2016.
