West Point Special Referendum Passes

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s official, by a vote of 60.3% West Point residents have increased the restaurant and hotel tax by 1%.

Saturday polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a special referendum to raise the hotel, food and beverage tax from 1% to 2%.

City officials say, the tax increase will help raise revenue for the Growth Alliance to work with for economic development in the community.

Money will also be used to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal to attract visitors to the area.

The tax increase didn’t come without any opposition.

Now passed the increase takes affect immediately.
