COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s homecoming weekend at the W and the Class of 1963 celebrated 50 years of the “long blue line”.

A lot of things have changed since 1963. In fact, the Columbus college even had a different name back then.

“I was an MSCW(Mississippi Stater College for Women) girl. That’s where we were 50 years ago. We weren’t MUW then. Things are still the same but the new additions, the growth, it’s been beautiful. The campus is gorgeous. It was always the most beautiful campus in the world to me,” says Carolyn Kimbrough, Class of 1963.

Homecoming activities started on Thursday with a parade throughout campus and on College Street. Alumnae still follow many of the traditions created years ago.

“When the Alums came back as Golden Girls, they always wore fur coats. My roommate and I said we could never come back until we got a fur coat. So I am in what I call my fur coat which is my 1963 W jacket. We were called Missy Dear and the back was of course called Mississippi State College for Women. So I’m going to turn around so you can see the back,” says Trish Paschal Eccles, Class President in 1963 .

After a recent change in leadership, these graduates say they are pleased with the direction the University is headed in under Dr. Jim Borsig.

“I think Jim Borsig is going to be a good President for us. I’m glad those issues have been resolved as an alumnae. Needless to say and I think he’ll do a fine job,” says Barbara Austin,” Student Body Pres in 1963.

The Class of 1963 will also host a reunion dinner on Saturday night at the President’s home.

MUW homecoming festivities will continue throughout the weekend and commence with Sunday church services at 11am in the Carrier Chapel.
