COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus residents are getting involved in a new city-wide initiative. With the unveiling of a new comprehensive plan, local leaders are serious about growth and development.

New Columbus resident Ronald Crowe says, “This was really neat, kind of unusual. It’s almost like a town hall meeting. You get to meet your leaders face to face.”

Ronald Crowe is new to Columbus. He found the city’s Service Fair to be helpful and informative. It highlighted what city services are offered and gave folks a chance to meet department heads face to face.

Columbus’s City Service Fair has 13 different departments on hand for area residents to ask plenty of questions.

According to Columbus City Planner Christina Berry, “You can ask how a pot hole can be reported all the way on to what’s going on with annexation.”

People are also learning about the city’s new comprehensive plan, the Highway 45 Corridor project, a Healthy Hometown initiative and the $400,000 Brownsfield grant program. Residents both young and old are having their concerns addressed.

Life long Columbus resident Margaret Evans says, “The main thing to see what it’s all about and to see what is continuing to be done about the handicap. I go to most of the city council meetings.”

Thursday’s fair offered two sessions, one at lunch time and one in the evening. With the city taking a proactive approach about transparency, many residents and city leaders feel Thursday’s meet and greet was a step in the right direction.
