Video: Columbus High Students Hear From Columbus Candidates

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Some soon to be voters at Columbus High School heard from candidates in the upcoming city election.

More than 300 students listened to the people running for mayor and city council on Wednesday.

Crime, education, and jobs were the main topics discussed.

Educators say the forum gives the teens an opportunity to help control their future, by listening to the issues and finding a candidate to support.

“It is very important that they learn to be participants in their society, and so this is a part of their history class. Where they learn the context of it and how they are able to apply what they learned,” said Columbus Municipal School District Superintendent Philip Hickman.

The school will help the students register to vote on Thursday.
