WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — A West Point teenager is earning points towards the Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant while doing something that’s dear to her heart, collecting toys and school supplies for sick children.

It’s the pet project of Oak Hill Academy sophomore Mikayla Poindexter, the toy drive began today, and runs through this month. Toys and items like crayons, markers, paper and other items are being collected at Oak Hill and the elementary school.

“When I was eight, I found out that I had a heart condition and I needed a pace maker. So, I saw a lot of sick kids while I was in the hospital. Like, they don’t get to do normal things that normal kids get to do, because they are stuck in the hospital all day,” said Poindexter.

Poindexter will take the collected items to sick children at Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson.
