Court Blocks Benefits For Former Fayette Co. Sheriff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Alabama Supreme Court says a former sheriff seeking state benefits can’t claim the money after felony convictions drove him from office.

The court ruled against former Fayette County Sheriff Hubert Norris in a decision Friday.

The justices upheld a lower court ruling in a suit by the Fayette County Commission, which was trying to block Norris receiving compensation by being a supernumerary sheriff.

Norris served four terms as sheriff before pleading guilty to bribery and other charges and resigning in 1989. He served time in federal prison but was later pardoned by the state and re-elected sheriff in 2002.

Norris was appointed as a supernumerary sheriff, a position that would allow him to benefits, but county commissioners sought to block payments.

The justices sided the convictions in agreeing.
