RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) Rankin County is looking to invest in an extra layer of protection for its officers. The county has its eye on a military-grade Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle to replace an older, refurbished armored vehicle.

Rankin County will be the second county in the state to receive an MRAP, tailing DeSoto County which recently received one.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the country can apply to receive surplus military-grade equipment, including firearms, equipment and aircraft, via the United States Department of Defense’s 1033 program.

Rankin County has previously dabbled in the program, receiving M-14s and M-16s to equip its patrol lieutenants and sergeants.
