LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) Late last month, 27 dogs and 5 horses were removed from deplorable conditions off Highway 46, near Montpelier.

23 of the dogs were pitbulls.

Shaw Pitbull Rescue took in 17 of the pits, including two very pregnant mama dogs. If those pups could tell a story, it would probably be a sad one. Battered, beaten, and abused, the dogs have more than just breed in common.

“They have a happy home while they are here with us. They get all the love they need,” says rescue volunteer Lesley Bailey.

Kenneth Shaw is a member of the pit crew. He and his wife Aimee opened Shaw Pitbull rescue a year ago. What began with one dog in need has rapidly transformed into a kennel that houses 59 pit bull and pit mixes.

“We never expected to have this many,” says Kenneth Shaw.

Kenneth and volunteer Lesley Bailey say the end goal is to find these dogs loving homes.

“Then we have to meet the people to see how the dogs react to them. Since these (dogs) came from the case they did, they aren’t going anywhere until they are spayed and neutered,” says Shaw.

I then met with some of the youngest members of the Shaw family.

“That’s why we need donations, all these new mouths to feed,” says Shaw.

For Kenneth Shaw and the rest of the pit crew at Shaw Rescue, raising awareness about the needs of this misunderstood breed is just one more day in the life.

The Clay County couple responsible for many of those dogs, must pay nearly $10,000 in fines and restitution for cruelty to animals. In the meantime, Shaw Rescue needs your donations.

They will be at Tractor Supply stores in Starkville and Columbus this Saturday. For more info on how you can help, visit their http://shawpitbullrescue.com/
