Video: Dementia Diagnoses on the Rise Nationwide

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Dementia is a medical term used to described memory loss.

Its becoming a growing problem nationwide.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia.

When we hear about someone being diagnosed with dementia, usually we think of older people in their 60’s or 70’s.

However, it’s becoming common to see people diagnosed in their 40’s and 50’s.

It’s a hereditary disease.

Some of its symptoms include confusion, forgetfulness, and difficulty communicating or finding words, just to name a few.

There’s no cure for the disease but it can be treated to help slow down the progression.

Once a person is diagnosed, the disease can force people to have to quit or leave their jobs, and require them to be under someone’s supervision for a large part of the day.

“I would say we are seeing more and more individuals with various forms of dementia,” said Misty Holder, admissions director, and licensed social worker at Plantation Pointe. “There is vascular dementia, there is a lewy body dementia, mixed dementia, there is Parkinson’s related dementia. More and more individuals are being diagnosed with dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common form of it, and you’re also seeing more diagnosis and an earlier age. Early onset dementia is becoming more prevalent.”

If anyone knows someone who’s suffering from dementia..there’s several support groups available.
