Diabetes Awareness Month

Aliceville, Ala.(WCBI)—November marks the time of year when all eyes are fixed on Diabetes for National Diabetes awareness month.

Aliceville residents wanted to end the month honoring those who’s lost their battle with the disease and those who are currently in the fight.

I got a chance to hit the pavement with the group this morning and learn about the importance of being vigilant when it comes to your health.

For some Aliceville residents the IRON Bowl Grid iron Clash began at 8:00 this morning. Event Coordinator Belinda Craig says though it was early… it’s worth it to make people aware.

” To let people know about Diabetes. That it is a serious disease. Many people have died from diabetes and it has an effect on the body in a lot of ways: Your eyesight, your heart so you have to take care,”said Craig.

Craig has been spear heading The Diabetes for 4 years now and she comes back each year because it’s a passion that hits close to home.

” I had a nephew that died 4 years ago in October from injuries in a car accident but he was also a diabetic. He was very involved very active. He played football. We wanted to start a scholarship in his name to keep his memory alive,”said Craig.

Walk Participant Alicia Cunningham is says she participates each year because the need for education and awareness is so great.

” Being from a rural area we need to be aware of diabetes and how it effects African america communities and how it impact people that live in such a low income area. Let everyone know that outside of Pickens county that there are things that need that surrounding counties cities and the government needs to be involved in trying to stamp out this disease,”said Cunningham.

Cunningham say exercise is a major tool in combating the disease but there are other measure you can take as well.

“You need to have a healthy life style. You need to watch what you eat watch what your drinking, Try and make sure your lowering your calorie intake and also too you need to make sure you actually go to the physicians office to know what your actual sugar glucose level is you need to get it tested,”said Cunningham.

The walk concluded with a presentation to the first second and third place participants. Now, If you want to get involved next year Your asked to contact Mrs. Belinda Craig at…………
